  1. Statement Condemning Targeting of El Memidany Hospital in Northern Gaza

European North African Center for Research

17th October 2023

We strongly condemn the heinous act of targeting El Memidany Hospital in northern Gaza, where civilians, including children and women, as well as the injured, were subjected to a devastating Israeli airstrike. Such an attack on a medical facility is an alarming violation of fundamental human rights and a blatant breach of international law.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities must always be regarded as sanctuaries of healing and refuge for the sick and wounded.

The deliberate targeting of El Memidany Hospital is not only morally reprehensible but also inexcusable under international humanitarian law. It is a direct contravention of the Geneva Conventions and the principle of proportionality, which expressly prohibit attacks on civilian infrastructure and those providing essential medical care.

The victims of this ruthless attack are not mere statistics but individuals, families, and communities who were already enduring the hardships of conflict. The assault has left lasting scars on those who survived and has deepened the trauma of an already suffering population.

We call upon the international community to unequivocally condemn this act of violence and to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and protection of all civilians in conflict zones. Such actions require accountability and justice, as well as a commitment to preserving the sanctity of humanitarian institutions.

Furthermore, we urge all parties involved in the ongoing conflict to cease the targeting of civilian areas and to engage in peaceful dialogue and diplomacy to reach a lasting resolution that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals affected by this conflict. It is our collective responsibility to uphold human rights and international law and to prevent further harm to innocent civilians.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza and reiterate our condemnation of any actions that cause harm to civilian populations. We call for an immediate end to hostilities and for the protection of all civilians, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or location.
